Not all hashtags are created equal
Hashtags have become a way we interact on social media. We use them in our sentances, and as a way to tell people what we are talking about.
ex: I love a big horn! #unicorn
The addition of #unicorn indicates what you are talking about, as opposed to #tuba.
But hashtags are a way to increase your exposure, as most of us know. However, they are also a way to find people to engage with. Question is, how do you know what the good ones are?
If you go to Twitter.com and look at the left side of your newsfeed, you will see a "trends" sidebar. This tells you what hashtags and keywords are currently trending on Twitter. This can be a fun way to give you something to tweet about, and get involved with a different conversation. But that does not mean it is relevant to you. You need to know about the hashtags that are good for your business, like #porn #nsfw, #cammodel, #amateurgirl.
If you go to Twitter.com and do a search for a hashtag, you will see 3 relevant feed options. One shows top tweets, the second show live tweets, and the third show top accounts. If you look at the two top ones you will see who and what the top tweets are, and who the top tweeting accounts are. If you look at the live feed, you will get a good idea of how actively the hashtag is being used. The top account and top tweet information is valuable because those are people who are either doing well with the hashtag you want to use, or could help you along the way. If you see a fan who uses one of your desired hashtags in the top, then he would be a good person to target for engagement opportunity.
Another way to see this information is to go to tweetreach.com, type in the hashtag you are interested in, and it will tell you the reach and the top people using it. The reach is a good thing to know as well, because it lets you know how influential a hashtag is and if it actually getting traction. If you see a reach of 5,000,000 then you know a lot of people, or big people are tweeting it. If you see a reach of 5,000 then maybe it is not so great.
Using hashtags is a lot more than just helping you out with search results. It can help you find opportunity to get your audience working for you.
